Brak wanted to thank Time Magazine for naming him “Person of the Year”. It was a sad moment when we had to again tell him that the other guy got the nod. Brak rebounded nicely by offering his public relations services to Caroline Kennedy. Happy holidays everyone! We’ll see you in 2009-to paraphrase Ryan Seacrest “Jazzzdog out!”

... here is the music we vote for ...

Stryker-Slagle Band “The Scene”
(Zoho) was at number 19 at JazzWeek! Downbeat put this on their Best CDs of 2008 list. Dave says this about Joe Lovano: Joe’s a guy we have known for many years. Steve and Joe actually went to Berkley back in the 70s. I met Joe when I first came to town in the early 80s. We use to play jam sessions. Here are the cuts you dove into most: “Brighter Days”, “Six Four Teo”, “Skee”, “Kindred Spirits” and “Two Sense”.

Boz Scaggs “Speak Low” (Decca Records) was at number 37 at JazzWeek this week. Boz says this about keeping the tempos slow: “We were surprised at how the slow ballad tempo gave the lyrics more emotional depth”. Here are the hot cuts from the week: “Speak Low”, “She Was Too Good To Me”, “Invitation”, “Save Your Love for Me” and “This Time the Dream’s On Me”.

Christian Scott “Christian Scott: Live at Newport” (Concord Records) ended the year at NUMBER FOUR at CMJ! Christian is taking the opportunity to play at Snugg Harbor when he goes home to New Orleans for the holidays. Here are the hot tracks of the week: “Anthem”, “Isadora”, “James Crow Jr., Esq.”, “Died in Love” and “Litany Against Fear”.

Jacqui Naylor “You Don’t Know Jacq” (Ruby Records) finished the year at number 23 at CMJ! Cover Freaks really digs Jacqui’s version of “Miss You” calling it: “it something smoking and erotic”. Here are the cuts that got early attention: “Black Coffee”, “Summertime”, “Miss You”, “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “This is the Spot”.

Rachael Price “The Good Hours”
(Claire Vision Productions) ended the year at number 28 at CMJ! Rachael’s influences range from Patsy Cline to Ella to Stevie Wonder. Here are the hot tracks of the week: “That Old Black Magic”, “Stairway to the Stars”, “You Go To My Head”, “The Trolley Song” and “From This Moment On”.

Buena Vista Social Club “Buena Vista Social Club at Carnegie Hall” (Nonesuch) ended the year at NUMBER ONE New World at CMJ this week and number 31 at the Jazz Chart. Ry Cooder said this about the Social Club: "Music is a treasure hunt," says Cooder, "you dig and dig and sometimes you find something." Here are the most played tracks of the week: “Chan Chan”, “Mandinga”, “De Camino a la Vereda”, “Silencio” and “Quizos, Quizos”.

Herbie Hancock “Then and Now: The Definitive Herbie Hancock” (Verve) has one of the perfect songs for the holiday-“River”. Don’t forget it is a new live version (and that The Definitive Herbie Hancock makes a great holiday gift). Here are the tunes you played most this week: “River”, “Maiden Voyage”, “Cantaloupe Island”, “Chameleon” and “Watermelon Man”.
